Many people take a look at their decades-old kitchen and know it is time to do some replacing.  You might think that you will need to rip out and replace the existing cabinets completely, but there is another option available as well.  One of the best options doesn’t require ripping cupboards off the walls and tossing them into the landfill.  You just get replacement kitchen doors and switch them with the old ones that are already there.  Although there is a bit more complexity to completing this task than you might think, it is definitely a cheaper option.  Let’s explore the work involved so you can see if this option is right for you.

Replacement Kitchen Cabinet Doors:  Is This Option Right For You?

There comes a time in the life of every house where the kitchen just starts to look a bit run down.  Eventually, usually after decades of heavy use (or even no use at all!), the kitchen cabinets start looking dull and faded.  In addition to this, the small pieces of hardware that hold the kitchen cupboard doors and drawers together start to break as well.  Hinges don’t work properly, and kitchen drawers don’t slide out smoothly.  When this happens, you have a few choices.

• You can tear everything out and replace all of the cabinets.
• You can do what is called cabinet refacing, which involves putting new doors and drawer fronts on the cabinets, but leaving the rest intact.
• You can paint your existing kitchen cupboard doors so that they look nice again.

The list above is in order of cost and work involved.  As you might have guessed replacing all of the cabinets can cost a small fortune, depending on the type of material used and whether or not you are willing to do some or all of the work yourself.  Small tasks such as installing kitchen cupboard door handles are easy enough for most people to accomplish themselves, while mounting upper cabinets can be a daunting task best left to professionals if you don’t have any experience.  You may have no choice but to do a complete kitchen cupboard replacement if the interior of your cupboards are falling apart and in poor shape.
If the only thing that looks bad is the kitchen cupboard door, but the insides are still structurally sound, you can save yourself a large wad of money (I’m talking 10,000 or so) by refacing cabinets.  The work involved in this process consists mainly of removing the old ones and installing new kitchen cupboard doors and putting a thin layer of matching material on any other visible parts.  Doing only the kitchen cupboard doors replacement as opposed to a full cabinet replacement will usually cut your costs in half.  In addition to this, since there isn’t any heavy lifting or very precise measurements, it is a job that it is easier to do yourself if you are feeling up to it.

The final way to spruce up your home a bit is by painting kitchen cupboard doors.  It may sound like an easy task at first, but it is actually quite an elaborate process if you want to do it right and have the cupboards turn out looking great. If you live in an apartment or house that has small kitchen, it sometimes seems like you can’t fit anything else into them.  Most people just give up on the idea of having a luxury like a dishwasher because they think there really isn’t anywhere to put it.  Don’t give up hope yet though, since there are specially designed tabletop dishwashers designed for this exact situation.

What is a Tabletop Dishwasher?

Unlike their full size cousin, a tabletop dishwasher is meant for use in kitchens that don’t have room for a normal unit.  They are definitely smaller.  Most of them have the capacity to hold four place settings.  In comparison, full sized versions can usually hold around 9 settings.  But the reality is that apartments that have tiny kitchens usually aren’t all that big themselves, so one of these smaller units is usually large enough to handle the few people living there.

What is a Slimline Dishwasher?

You might be wondering what these appliances are.  How do they differ from normal dishwashers?   The answer is that slimline dishwashers are narrower and smaller than full size models.  These smaller dishwashers are made for use in kitchens that don’t have a lot of space to fit in a large dishwasher.  The reality is that slimline dishwashers are more common in Europe than in the United States and Canada.  The reason for this is simple-More Europeans live in smaller apartments and just don’t have the room for such large appliances.

Slimline Dishwasher Dimensions

To be able to fit inside tighter areas in small kitchen layouts, slimline dishwashers are usually 18 inches wide.  In contrast, full size dishwashers are nearly always 6 inches wider, with a width of 24 inches.  As for the height and depth, most major appliances are usually pretty standardized to ensure compatibility with other kitchen components.

Slimline Dishwasher Styles

Like other types of dishwashers, they tend to be made in a few different colors. Due to their substantial popularity in the UK, some of the better manufacturers of these appliances are located in Europe.  The Bosch slimline dishwasher is named the Integra 800 series 18 inch dishwasher.  Bosch makes some very high quality appliances, and its dishwashers are no exception.  If you are looking for a high end unit, take a look at a Miele slimline dishwasher as well.  They are right up there with Bosch in terms of quality, style, and compatibility.

While Bosch appliances tend to offer high quality products with high price tags to match them, you have cheaper options as well.  A Hotpoint slimline dishwasher will usually cost less, with some units even costing less than $300.  They offer decent quality dishwashers, but I haven’t seen any available with a customizable front.  If you want to go the inexpensive route, you will probably have to settle for white, black, or stainless steel.  Of course, if your cabinets are made of stainless steel, a silver slimline dishwasher should blend in just fine!  Likewise is also true with a black slimline dishwasher and black cabinets.  Unfortunately, the majority of cabinets are made out of different types of wood, so appliance manufacturers can’t offer this style.

If the time has come to replace your kitchen cabinets, there is something you need to know.  In many situations, the cabinets themselves are structurally sound, but they just look a little shabby.  While most people will just rip out the old cabinets, send them off to the dump, and install new ones, the price tag of this option is enough to scare even people with money to spare.  Fortunately there is something you can do that will give you nearly the same result as a complete replacement for just a fraction of the price.  What I’m talking about is refacing kitchen cabinets.  This job involves replacing just the visible parts of the cabinets, which are the doors and other surfaces, and leaving the rest intact.  Let’s take a more detailed look at what this job entails and how much it costs.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Cost

Fortunately for those of us who don’t want to spend half a year’s wages on our renovation, kitchen cabinet refacing can be a really economical solution to getting a new looking kitchen.  While the price of removing and installing your cabinets can cost upwards of $20,000 and more, refacing them on the other hand can cost much, much less.  The price you will pay depends on what materials you want to use for your new doors, and other surfaces, and whether or not you are willing to do it yourself.  In most western countries, doing a job like this yourself can easily cut the kitchen cabinet refacing price in half. Even if you’ve never done this before, there is a plethora of books and other information that will show you step by step how to tackle a job like this.  See them for yourself here

Let’s take a look at the work involved to reface kitchen cabinets.  Many people consider refacing kitchen cabinet doors to be the easy part of the job.  The other thing you need to do is put a layer of material on the other parts of the cabinets that are visible to the eye.  For this step, you have a choice of three materials.  The first one is plastic laminate, which is made to look like wood.  The second choice is known as rigid thermofoils, or RTF’s for short.   This material has one main advantage, which is that it can be easily molded to form various detailed shapes, such as grooves, arches, and the like.  The third type of material is wood veneer, which like its name suggests is made of real wood.  The advantage of using real wood veneer is that it you can get it in any number of types of wood, including oak, birch, cherry, and maple.  Doing this will allow you to use the same wood as the doors themselves.  This option is about 25% more expensive than using the cheaper plastic or RTF options.  As far as appearances go, real wood will obviously look the best and match the wooden doors as closely as possible, but the other materials are designed to do this as well.  If you look very closely at them, you will see a difference, but from a distance, most people will never even know!

Sooner or later, there comes a time when the cabinets that are in your kitchen start to look old and worn out.  Quality cupboards can last quite a while, but eventually even the best of them start to deteriorate from wear and tear and old age.  When this happens, you pretty much have three choices.  First, and most expensive, you can tear out all of the cabinets and install new ones.  The second way to do it is called kitchen cabinet refacing, which involves removing the doors and replacing them with new ones, along with other exposed areas.  The third method is called cabinet refinishing, which involves placing a new layer of material on top of the visible parts of the cabinets.  For this article, I’m going to explain the ins and outs of kitchen cabinets refacing so you can make an informed decision about whether this is something you want to do.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Cost

If you are trembling at the thought of dishing out tens of thousands of your hard earned dollars (or whatever currency you use), here is some good news for you:  Refacing kitchen cabinets cost about one-third of the cost of a full replacement.  In many cases, the structural integrity of your cabinets is fine, but the outside looks worn.  If you fall into this category, you really only need to replace the visible parts, which are the doors.  While a full cabinet replacement might cost $20,000 to $30,000 dollars, if you choose to reface kitchen cabinets, you might spend $5,000 to $10,000.  The reason why I can’t give you a specific price is because there are so many variables that affect the cost of the cabinets, including the type of material used the quality, and whether you pay someone to do it or try to tackle the job yourself.  If you are working on a very low budget and are either handy with tools (or are willing to give it a go anyway!), you can save yourself a heap of cash on the kitchen cabinet refacing price.

Additional Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Information

In addition to kitchen cabinet door refacing, which happens to be fairly easy to do, there is another step that many people find tricky.  The kitchen cabinets have lots of other surfaces that are visible, and you need to put a new finish on these so that they match the new doors.  You will need to put a new, thin material on these visible areas.  For this step, you generally have three choices as to materials that you can use.  All of them are designed to match the wood finish of your cabinets, but they differ in material and price.  Your choices are RTF’s, which stands for rigid thermofoils, laminates made of plastic (think of those fake wood floor panels), and wood veneer.  All of these are made to look like real wood, and while you can tell the difference right up close, from a distance they do the job quite well.  If you think you might want to tackle this job yourself, I highly recommend getting one of these books to show you the step by step methods involved in this renovation.

One of the most important parts of the bar is the refrigerator, which keeps all of the beverages nice and frosty.  Most people spend a lot of time designing their bar, so it is important that nothing stands out like a sore thumb.  Bar fridges are great appliances, but since they are usually not as big as full sized kitchen refrigerators, people often wonder where they should put them. You have a few choices when it comes to installing your bar fridge, and here is a little guide to help you.

The easiest way to install mini bar fridges is to simply put them on the counter or bar.  Although this is an easy option, it only works well in certain situation.  If you spend a decent amount of money and buy a refrigerator that

looks really good, you will feel proud to show it off, front and center.  The kind of appliance that I am talking about usually has a bar fridge glass door so that you can see everything inside.  Having a refrigerator like this is nice because it lets people take a look for themselves and decide what they want.

The drawback to getting a really nice bar fridge is that they tend to cost a lot.  If you don’t want to spend a whole wad of cash on your refrigerator, you can get a simple, small one and keep it conveniently hidden out of sight. Where, you might ask?  One of the best places to put a small bar fridge is inside a cabinet.  If you are still designing your bar layout, it is easy to allow a large space for a refrigerator to go.  If your cabinets are already there, you will have to choose a fridge that fits into one of them.  To do this, use a tape measure and get the dimensions of the inside of the cabinet.  Subtract an inch or so on all sides (and depth), and this will give you the maximum size bar fridge dimensions.   Make sure the cabinet is deep enough to fit the refrigerator in even with the handle on it.  Once you know your mini bar fridge fits, you will need to electricity to it.  This will usually involve drilling a small hole in the back of the cabinet so you can put the cord through it and reach an outlet.  If there isn’t a power outlet nearby, you can use an extension cord to make it reach.

There is another way to hide your bar fridge, and this way is to fully integrate your refrigerator.  The best way to get a refrigerator to blend in with the cabinets is by making it look like one from the front.  Some of the high end bar fridges are customizable, which means that you can place a wooden panel on the front of them that is made out of the same material as the surrounding cabinets.  It doesn’t matter if your cabinets are made of wood or stainless steel:  You can put either kind on it.  This method works great for people who want a large bar fridge that would be too large to fit into a cabinet.

Though many people have forgotten that percolators still exist, there are some people that still swear by these trusty coffee machines because they love their taste.  In a world filled with Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Tim Hortons, it is great to know that people are still using the same classic Farberware coffee percolators that have been in use for decades.  There are a few different types, so let’s take a closer look at some of them.

If you are thinking about getting a mini fridge freezer, there are some important things to consider.  Many people simply want to purchase the cheapest one they can get their hands on, but doing so often results in trouble later on.  There are definitely some good quality options out there, but there are some real lousy ones as well.  Investing a minimal amount of time into becoming an informed consumer will save you a lot of hassle down the road.  Here are some ideas to help you choose a good mini fridge with freezer.

What are the Most Important Features for Mini Fridge Freezers to Have?

Many of these appliances are pretty basic.  If there is one feature that you should really look out for, it is a working freezer. If you’ve had any experience at all with these pint-sized refrigerators, you will know that many of them have freezer compartments that are pretty much useless.  First of all, the freezer part is so small that you can’t really fit anything but a Popsicle into it.  Even a normal size ice cube tray won’t fit in most of them.  In addition to their small size, many of these mini fridge and freezer units don’t freeze consistently and tend to ice up often.  They are alright for freezing a small number of ice cubes, but if you put ice cream in them, there is a good chance it will become a soggy mess shortly.
The solution to this problem is to buy a mini fridge freezer combo that has two separate compartments.  These appliances tend to work a lot better than those with just a flap for a freezer.  Igloo makes a 3.2 cubic foot model with separate compartments for about $200.  I know this one costs quite a bit more than the cheapest mini freezer fridge units, but it is a good appliance built by a quality manufacturer and will save you lots of frustration over spoiled or thawed out frozen items.
Of course, if you don’t care about having a freezer, you can easily find a mini fridge with separate freezer.  This kind of refrigerator will allow you to fit more stuff into it since it doesn’t have to waste any space on a freezer compartment.  Another consideration that you might have is the size of the unit.  The smallest mini fridges are so tiny that they can only fit a few cans inside.  I’m not sure what people do with these things, but I seem to always need extra room to cram groceries and drinks inside my mini fridge freezer.  I would recommend getting the biggest possible mini fridge that you can fit into the space you have.  The price doesn’t increase much for a larger unit, and you can easily fit everything you need in it.

There are all kinds of places where pint sized refrigerators come in very handy.  Offices use them to store employee lunches.  University and college students have come to depend on them as a dorm room necessity.  They have even found their way into garages, RV’s, trailers, and boats as a convenient way to keep things cold.  Before you go out and  buy a mini fridge with freezer though, it is wise to consider a few important things about these small appliances.

First of all, they come in many different sizes, from the ultra-small to about three quarters of the size of a normal refrigerator.  The size you get will depend on what you are going to use it for.  Obviously, it all you are going to do is keep your lunch in it everyday, you can go with a small model.  Maybe something like a 1.5 cubic foot capacity fridge would do.  If you are using one of these mini fridges in your apartment or dorm room however, I would spring for the biggest one you can afford and fit into your room.  The reason is that dorm rooms normally have 2 people in them, and these little fridges can fill up pretty fast.  A lot of times you can get a larger mini fridge for just a little bit more than a tiny one.

A second thing to look out for is the freezer on the unit.  Most mini fridges with freezers simply don’t work very well.  While the fridge part may work ok for keeping stuff chilled, the freezer part often becomes full of ice as it thaws and freezes repeatedly.  If you are using one of these appliances as your primary refrigerator, I would definitely recommend getting a mini fridge with separate freezer.  Units that have a separate freezer generally work a lot better than those that just contain a little flap at the top for a freezer.  You will want to be able to keep ice cubes handy for drinks, or shove some frozen dinners in there for quick meals in a hurry.

If you are concerned about the look of the mini fridge, they come in a few different styles.  The basic models are usually either black or white, but you can get fancier models that have a stainless steel finish.  One more great thing about many of these fridges is that the top of them doubles as a countertop for preparing food on.

As for the prices of these copper faucets, it really depends on which model you choose.  There are very inexpensive copper kitchen faucets that can be had for about $50 and there are also models that will cost upwards of $500.  It all depends on the manufacturer and the style you want.  In general, simple modern designs are usually a bit cheaper than fancy old fashioned looking antique copper kitchen faucet.

If you are considering purchasing a Pegasus kitchen faucet, there are a few things that you need to know.  First, Pegasus is a brand that is owned by The Home Depot, and these faucets are sold in their stores as well as on the internet.  One thing that customers should know about Pegasus faucets is that if you need to fix it later on, it is a bit harder to find parts for them.  While faucet parts are easily available for other brands like Moen, and Price Pfister, Pegasus faucet parts hardly seem to exist.  Even if you look at the Home Depot’s website, they only offer a few odds and ends, and not the parts you would need to replace a handle or something like that.

Though many people haven’t thought about them much, mini freezers can actually be a great money saving appliance in the home or apartment.  People with big houses and garages often have upright or chest freezers in the garage or storage room, but when you live in a small house or apartment, there often just isn’t room for one of these giant beasts.  One solution is to get a mini freezer, which takes up a lot less room than their giant chest freezer counterparts.
Here are some of the ways that a mini compact freezer can save you money.

1. You can grow vegetables in the summer and freeze them for eating all winter long.  This also works for fruits as well.  Apples, cherries, pears, and all kinds of other fruits last a long time in the freezer, and if you have a place to store them, you will save lots of money on fruit.  If you don’t have a garden, a fun thing to do is to go to you-pick farms to load up on berries and other fruits for freezing.
2. Buy produce when it is in-season for hefty savings.  Fruits and vegetables nearly always cost a lot less when they are harvested nearby.  These days supermarkets provide produce all year round, but it likely gets shipped from the other side of the world in the off season.
3. What is a mini freezer?
