Tabletop Dishwashers are Great for Small Kitchens

If you live in an apartment or house that has small kitchen, it sometimes seems like you can’t fit anything else into them.  Most people just give up on the idea of having a luxury like a dishwasher because they think there really isn’t anywhere to put it.  Don’t give up hope yet though, since there are specially designed tabletop dishwashers designed for this exact situation.

What is a Tabletop Dishwasher?

Unlike their full size cousin, a tabletop dishwasher is meant for use in kitchens tabletop dishwasherthat don’t have room for a normal unit.  They are definitely smaller.  Most of them have the capacity to hold four place settings.  In comparison, full sized versions can usually hold around 9 settings.  But the reality is that apartments that have tiny kitchens usually aren’t all that big themselves, so one of these smaller units is usually large enough to handle the few people living there.
The way these table top dishwashers work is you connect them directly the kitchen sink faucet with a hose for water intake, and place another hose in the sink for the drainage.  Although the hoses are always included with the dishwashers, they aren’t that long, so you will need to place the unit next to the sink when you want to use it.  Alternatively, you can get yourself a kitchen cart and put the portable tabletop dishwasher on the top of it.  Doing it this way is a great idea because you can store it out of the way when not in use, and then simply push it next to the sink when you want to run it.  Since nearly all kitchen carts and islands have wheels on them, it will save your back some wear and tear.

Brands of Tabletop Dishwashers

There are a number of different companies that manufacture these nifty little appliances. One of the most economical is the haier tabletop dishwasher.  Haier seems to specialize in lower priced appliances, and their dishwashers are no exception.  Prices on these appliances start at just over $200.  You can also choose a Danby tabletop dishwasher for around the same price. While full sized dishwashers tend to come packed with all the latest features like 5 cycle options, the small countertop dishwashers tend to be pretty basic.  They will wash your dishes, but don’t expect them to do a whole lot more than that.  Take a look at these reviews of tabletop dishwashers to get an idea of which ones work better than others.

What Are Slimline Dishwashers?

What is a Slimline Dishwasher?

You might be wondering what these appliances are.  How do they differ from normal dishwashers?   The answer is that slimline dishwashers are narrower and smaller than full size models.  These smaller dishwashers are made for use in kitchens that don’t have a lot of space to fit in a large dishwasher.  The reality is that slimline dishwashers are more common in Europe than in the United States and Canada.  The reason for this is simple-More Europeans live in smaller apartments and just don’t have the room for such large appliances.

Slimline Dishwasher Dimensions

To be able to fit inside tighter areas in small kitchen layouts, slimline dishwashers are usually 18 inches wide.  In contrast, full size dishwashers are nearly always 6 inches wider, with a width of 24 inches.  As for the height and depth, most major appliances are usually pretty standardized to ensure compatibility with other kitchen components.

Slimline Dishwasher Styles

Like other types of dishwashers, they tend to be made in a few different colors. If you want a solid color, you have the choice of black, white, or stainless steel.  Many people these days are choosing to integrate their kitchens.  For this reason, you can get an integrated slimline dishwasher – what this means is that you affix a front panel of your choice onto the front of the unit.  This option will allow your dishwasher to be pretty much indistinguishable from the cabinets surrounding it.  For more information, read my integrated dishwasher post.

Slimline Dishwasher Brands

Due to their substantial popularity in the UK, some of the better manufacturers of these appliances are located in Europe.  The Bosch slimline dishwasher is named the Integra 800 series 18 inch dishwasher.  Bosch makes some very high quality appliances, and its dishwashers are no exception.  If you are looking for a high end unit, take a look at a Miele slimline dishwasher as well.  They are right up there with Bosch in terms of quality, style, and compatibility.

While Bosch appliances tend to offer high quality products with high price tags to match them, you have cheaper options as well.  A Hotpoint slimline dishwasher will usually cost less, with some units even costing less than $300.  They offer decent quality dishwashers, but I haven’t seen any available with a customizable front.  If you want to go the inexpensive route, you will probably have to settle for white, black, or stainless steel.  Of course, if your cabinets are made of stainless steel, a silver slimline dishwasher should blend in just fine!  Likewise is also true with a black slimline dishwasher and black cabinets.  Unfortunately, the majority of cabinets are made out of different types of wood, so appliance manufacturers can’t offer this style.

Choosing a Bosch Semi Integrated Dishwasher

In the world of dishwashers, there are normal ones and there are standouts.  Bosch is one company that certainly focuses on high quality dishwashers.  While other appliance manufacturers tend to focus on the cheap dishwasher market, Bosch focuses on high end models, which look great, are packed with features, and come with a price tag to match this quality.  You have 2 basic choices in dishwashers from this company.  You can choose one that has the controls visible, or you can have one where the controls are hidden from view.  A Bosch semi integrated dishwasher is a unit that has visible controls, and a fully integrated model has its control panel conveniently hidden out of sight.  For this article, I will focus on the visible control kinds.

Why Bosch Semi Integrated Dishwashers?

You might be wondering what makes these dishwashers different from all of the others if the controls are visible.  A semi integrated dishwasher is specially made to blend in with the cabinets or other appliances that are placed around it.  With Bosch, most models come in 3 color choices:  Black, White, or Stainless Steel.  Which one you get will depend on the color of your cabinets, refrigerator, range oven, and other items that are in your kitchen.  This company gives its dishwashers a very stylish exterior, which means that they look great in your kitchen, as opposed to some of the cheaper appliances, which often look clunky and awkward.

Bosch Semi Integrated Dishwasher Features

Good looks aren’t the only things that go into Bosch dishwashers.  The features they have really put them in a class of their own.  One of their great features is their amazingly quiet operation.  Many people hate running their dishwashers because they are annoyingly loud.  The Bosch Evolution series dishwashers run at only 44 decibels.  If you don’t know what that means, consider this:  Whispering in the library or the hum of your refrigerator is 30 decibels, and normal conversation is 60-70 decibels, so the dishwashers are just a touch above whispering.  This means that unless your ear is right next to your dishwasher, you probably won’t even hear it. In comparison, cheaper dishwashers are often twice as loud. Take a look at this decibel chart to see for yourself.
Of course, Bosch dishwashers come packed with many other features as well.  Stuff like the ability to run half loads, automatic water saving devices, quadruple water filtration, a concealed heating element that won’t melt plastic items, and a sanitizing option that kills 99.9% of bacteria.  Bosch simply packs a lot more features into its semi integrated dishwashers than most of its competitors do.  Though they might not be the best choice if you are looking for a very cheap dishwasher, they are certainly a great option for a quality machine.

Why Choose a Bosch Integrated Dishwasher

If you want to give your kitchen a seamless look, you need to choose appliances that don’t stand out.  As for dishwashers, this type is called an integrated dishwasher.  This type of dishwasher is nearly always packed with features, has a stylish exterior, and quality built.  Of the manufacturers that produce these dish-washing units, a Bosch integrated dishwasher is a great choice.  Bosch clearly focuses on high end appliances, and this includes integrated appliances.  Let’s take a look at what this means.

What is a Bosch Integrated Dishwasher?

By definition, the term fully integrated means that a dishwasher (or other appliance) blends in as completely as possible with its surroundings.  This means that Bosch fully integrated dishwashers have their control panel hidden out of view.  While normal dishwashers have their controls clearly visible on the front, fully integrated models put them on the top of the door.  You access the controls by pulling out the door.

Bosch Integrated Dishwasher Styles

Bosch Dishwashers come in four main styles:  Black, White, Stainless Steel, or Custom Panel.  If you have a kitchen with white, black, or stainless steel cabinets, you can get a fully integrated dishwasher in the same color to match.  Bosch also produces 5 types of dishwashers that accept custom panels.  This means that you can place a wooden panel on the front of it that perfectly matches your cabinets.  To achieve this, all you need to do is provide whoever makes your kitchen cabinets with the dimensions of your dishwasher, and they will make a wooden panel that easily attaches to the front of your unit.  If you are creating a new kitchen or remodeling an old one, this should be very easy to do.  If you just want to replace your old dishwasher with an integrated model, what you can do is remove one of the doors from your kitchen cabinets, bring it to a cabinet maker, and they will produce a panel that matches it.  If you have ever seen a kitchen with one of these fully integrated dishwashers in it, the only way that you can even tell that there is a dishwasher in the kitchen is by seeing the handle.

Bosch Integrated Dishwasher Features

As is true with most of their products, Bosch dishwashers pack in all kinds of features that put them clearly in a class above most of their competitors.  Some of the dozens of features that these dishwashers offer included the following:

  • Nearly silent motors that you can barely hear
  • Solid base that limits vibrations and prevents leaks
  • Water and energy saving devices
  • Half load options for when you don’t need to run a full load
  • Concealed heating element that won’t burn plastic items placed inside
  • Water softener and filters

What is a Semi Integrated Dishwasher?

When it comes to dishwashers, you have three basic choices in style.  There are normal dishwashers, semi integrated dishwashers, and fully integrated dishwashers.  Many people get confused about how these appliances differ, so I’ll try to provide a little information here to make it clear.
What separates the different styles of dishwashers is the placement of the controls.  The normal type that is most commonly seen has a control panel on the upper front of the unit that lets you turn the machine on and run the machine.  A semi integrated dishwasher, by definition, has a control panel that is still visible, but blends in a little more.

When talking about kitchens, the work “integrated” refers to the way the different parts of the kitchen blend in with each other.  Some people want a kitchen that has all appliances and cabinets constructed out of matching materials.  The most common types of materials used are wood and stainless steel.  If you have kitchen cabinets made out of wood, an integrated kitchen would involve getting a refrigerator and a dishwasher that has a wooden panel on the front of it, which allows it to blend in.  If your cabinets are silver, you can get a stainless steel dishwasher and refrigerator to match.

When looking at dishwashers, units that are labeled as semi integrated are nearly always better looking, have more features, and come with a higher price tag.  While cheaper dishwashers usually have the normal basic features and compete on price, semi integrated dishwashers usually have additional features that make them more desirable.  One of these features is an ultra quiet motor, which eliminates the noisy hum that makes people dislike their dishwasher.  Some new dishwashers run so quiet that you can barely hear them, which means that it is fine to run them while you are entertaining guests.  If your dishwasher is still too loud, many new dishwashers now feature a delayed start option, which automatically turns the unit on at a time when it won’t disturb you, such as during the day when you are at work.

Types of Semi Integrated Dishwashers

There are a few different styles of these dishwashers.  Most of them look like normal dishwashers that are in homes everywhere, but there are others that are designed a bit different.  One of these styles is the semi integrated double dishwasher.  These appliances have two separate drawers that can be operated either individually or simultaneously.  If you have just a few dishes, you can simply load one drawer and run the machine.  If you have lots, you can use both.  The versatility of these dishwashers cuts down on wasted water as well.  In addition to their functionality, double dishwashers usually have a lot more style than normal single units.  They come in black, white, or stainless steel finishes, and are a great choice if you are trying to integrate your kitchen.
