Choosing a Bosch Semi Integrated Dishwasher

In the world of dishwashers, there are normal ones and there are standouts.  Bosch is one company that certainly focuses on high quality dishwashers.  While other appliance manufacturers tend to focus on the cheap dishwasher market, Bosch focuses on high end models, which look great, are packed with features, and come with a price tag to match this quality.  You have 2 basic choices in dishwashers from this company.  You can choose one that has the controls visible, or you can have one where the controls are hidden from view.  A Bosch semi integrated dishwasher is a unit that has visible controls, and a fully integrated model has its control panel conveniently hidden out of sight.  For this article, I will focus on the visible control kinds.

Why Bosch Semi Integrated Dishwashers?

You might be wondering what makes these dishwashers different from all of the others if the controls are visible.  A semi integrated dishwasher is specially made to blend in with the cabinets or other appliances that are placed around it.  With Bosch, most models come in 3 color choices:  Black, White, or Stainless Steel.  Which one you get will depend on the color of your cabinets, refrigerator, range oven, and other items that are in your kitchen.  This company gives its dishwashers a very stylish exterior, which means that they look great in your kitchen, as opposed to some of the cheaper appliances, which often look clunky and awkward.

Bosch Semi Integrated Dishwasher Features

Good looks aren’t the only things that go into Bosch dishwashers.  The features they have really put them in a class of their own.  One of their great features is their amazingly quiet operation.  Many people hate running their dishwashers because they are annoyingly loud.  The Bosch Evolution series dishwashers run at only 44 decibels.  If you don’t know what that means, consider this:  Whispering in the library or the hum of your refrigerator is 30 decibels, and normal conversation is 60-70 decibels, so the dishwashers are just a touch above whispering.  This means that unless your ear is right next to your dishwasher, you probably won’t even hear it. In comparison, cheaper dishwashers are often twice as loud. Take a look at this decibel chart to see for yourself.
Of course, Bosch dishwashers come packed with many other features as well.  Stuff like the ability to run half loads, automatic water saving devices, quadruple water filtration, a concealed heating element that won’t melt plastic items, and a sanitizing option that kills 99.9% of bacteria.  Bosch simply packs a lot more features into its semi integrated dishwashers than most of its competitors do.  Though they might not be the best choice if you are looking for a very cheap dishwasher, they are certainly a great option for a quality machine.

What is a Semi Integrated Dishwasher?

When it comes to dishwashers, you have three basic choices in style.  There are normal dishwashers, semi integrated dishwashers, and fully integrated dishwashers.  Many people get confused about how these appliances differ, so I’ll try to provide a little information here to make it clear.
What separates the different styles of dishwashers is the placement of the controls.  The normal type that is most commonly seen has a control panel on the upper front of the unit that lets you turn the machine on and run the machine.  A semi integrated dishwasher, by definition, has a control panel that is still visible, but blends in a little more.

When talking about kitchens, the work “integrated” refers to the way the different parts of the kitchen blend in with each other.  Some people want a kitchen that has all appliances and cabinets constructed out of matching materials.  The most common types of materials used are wood and stainless steel.  If you have kitchen cabinets made out of wood, an integrated kitchen would involve getting a refrigerator and a dishwasher that has a wooden panel on the front of it, which allows it to blend in.  If your cabinets are silver, you can get a stainless steel dishwasher and refrigerator to match.

When looking at dishwashers, units that are labeled as semi integrated are nearly always better looking, have more features, and come with a higher price tag.  While cheaper dishwashers usually have the normal basic features and compete on price, semi integrated dishwashers usually have additional features that make them more desirable.  One of these features is an ultra quiet motor, which eliminates the noisy hum that makes people dislike their dishwasher.  Some new dishwashers run so quiet that you can barely hear them, which means that it is fine to run them while you are entertaining guests.  If your dishwasher is still too loud, many new dishwashers now feature a delayed start option, which automatically turns the unit on at a time when it won’t disturb you, such as during the day when you are at work.

Types of Semi Integrated Dishwashers

There are a few different styles of these dishwashers.  Most of them look like normal dishwashers that are in homes everywhere, but there are others that are designed a bit different.  One of these styles is the semi integrated double dishwasher.  These appliances have two separate drawers that can be operated either individually or simultaneously.  If you have just a few dishes, you can simply load one drawer and run the machine.  If you have lots, you can use both.  The versatility of these dishwashers cuts down on wasted water as well.  In addition to their functionality, double dishwashers usually have a lot more style than normal single units.  They come in black, white, or stainless steel finishes, and are a great choice if you are trying to integrate your kitchen.

Looking for an Integrated Dishwasher?

Many people all over the world have a dishwasher in their home.  To some it is one of their most treasured helpers. To others it is a loud, vibrating, annoying pest.  The last few years has brought about a change in the design and manufacturing of dishwashers.  You can now get what is called an integrated dishwasher.  Now, most people are wondering what that means.  Does it work in unison with other appliances in your kitchen?  Not exactly.  Basically, integrated dishwashers are designed to blend in with your overall kitchen design.  The main difference that sets these appliances apart is that they have their controls on the top of the door that pulls out.  Because the controls are hidden, when you see the kitchen, you see a uniform design, instead of a bunch of different shaped, different colored appliances with lights and buttons all over them.
These are top of the line machines, the best home dishwashers that are made.  Since most people who have luxurious kitchens tend to choose appliances made out of stainless steel, the dishwasher is also made out of this same material.  This allows it to blend in with the other large appliances in the kitchen like the refrigerator, the range oven, and the lower cabinets.  If you want are looking for an integrated dishwasher, you have two basic choices when it comes to where the control buttons are located.

Fully Integrated Dishwashers

If you want people to look at your kitchen and not even know they are looking at a dishwasher, then a fully integrated dishwasher is for you.  These machines are sleek and shiny, with only a handle that protrudes.  Pull the handle to open the door, and the control panel will be there on top of the door.  This hiding of the buttons is in essence what sets fully integrated machines apart from those that aren’t.

Semi Integrated Dishwashers

If you want a dishwasher that still has a sleek, fashionable look that blends in with your other appliances, but you are willing to live with the buttons being visible on the door of the machine, then a semi integrated dishwasher is for you.  These snazzy looking machines can match your other large appliances as well.  A Bosch semi integrated dishwasher has a great look, with a price that is cheaper than with the controls completely hidden.

Different styles of integrated dishwashers

Most people design their kitchens with a single color in mind.  They try to get all of their appliances to match each other.  The vast majority of people choose to the same few colors – White, Black, or the shiny color of Stainless Steel.  Appliance manufacturers know this all too well, so they make their dishwashers in these colors as well.  It is possible to get an integrated dishwasher in a color other than those just mentioned, but you have to search a little harder to find it.

Features of integrated dishwashers

In addition to having a style that sets them apart from normal dishwashers, integrated dishwashers can come with some other great features as well, depending on the company that makes it.  Here are a few features to look for:
•    A Bosch integrated dishwasher can be so quiet that you will hardly even know that it is on.  Many people are so used to having annoyingly loud dishwashers, and will be quite pleased at how quiet these machines are.
•    These machines tend to have a larger capacity than other dishwashers.  Many integrated dishwashers can wash fifteen or more place settings in each load.
•    Top of the line integrated dishwashers come with all kinds of bells and whistles including triple filters, automatic sensors that can tell how dirty the dishes are (don’t ask how!), and extra washing and drying cycles.
•    Double drawers – Some integrated dishwashers come with two separate drawers, A large one on the top and a smaller drawer on the bottom.  Each drawer can run its own load, separate from the other one.
•    An integrated slimline dishwasher is narrower than a normal dishwasher.  This allows it to fit into smaller spaces where space is an issue.

Brands of Integrated Dishwashers

A number of manufacturers produce integrated dishwashers, including Miele, Whirlpool, Thermador, LG, Bosch, Maytag, and Kitchenaid.
A Miele dishwasher can come with a custom integrated dishwasher door, which will allow it to blend in with whatever the rest of the kitchen is using.  You can choose one with false cabinet drawers that make it disappear into your kitchen design.  This is a great feature if you want a color or design different than the standard white, black or stainless steel.  A Bosch fully integrated dishwasher is a great choice as well, but if you want to customize the front of it completely, the Miele is your choice.

Prices of integrated dishwashers

When you step up to semi and fully integrated dishwashers, you are going to have to spend more than the standard models.  At the low end of the price range, you will have models that cost around $800.  For a full featured, top quality integrated dishwasher, be prepared to pay between anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500. Adding a custom door will cost more as well.
