Tabletop Dishwashers are Great for Small Kitchens

If you live in an apartment or house that has small kitchen, it sometimes seems like you can’t fit anything else into them.  Most people just give up on the idea of having a luxury like a dishwasher because they think there really isn’t anywhere to put it.  Don’t give up hope yet though, since there are specially designed tabletop dishwashers designed for this exact situation.

What is a Tabletop Dishwasher?

Unlike their full size cousin, a tabletop dishwasher is meant for use in kitchens tabletop dishwasherthat don’t have room for a normal unit.  They are definitely smaller.  Most of them have the capacity to hold four place settings.  In comparison, full sized versions can usually hold around 9 settings.  But the reality is that apartments that have tiny kitchens usually aren’t all that big themselves, so one of these smaller units is usually large enough to handle the few people living there.
The way these table top dishwashers work is you connect them directly the kitchen sink faucet with a hose for water intake, and place another hose in the sink for the drainage.  Although the hoses are always included with the dishwashers, they aren’t that long, so you will need to place the unit next to the sink when you want to use it.  Alternatively, you can get yourself a kitchen cart and put the portable tabletop dishwasher on the top of it.  Doing it this way is a great idea because you can store it out of the way when not in use, and then simply push it next to the sink when you want to run it.  Since nearly all kitchen carts and islands have wheels on them, it will save your back some wear and tear.

Brands of Tabletop Dishwashers

There are a number of different companies that manufacture these nifty little appliances. One of the most economical is the haier tabletop dishwasher.  Haier seems to specialize in lower priced appliances, and their dishwashers are no exception.  Prices on these appliances start at just over $200.  You can also choose a Danby tabletop dishwasher for around the same price. While full sized dishwashers tend to come packed with all the latest features like 5 cycle options, the small countertop dishwashers tend to be pretty basic.  They will wash your dishes, but don’t expect them to do a whole lot more than that.  Take a look at these reviews of tabletop dishwashers to get an idea of which ones work better than others.

The Best Cheap Dishwashers

If you are on the lookout for cheap dishwashers, you should know that you are still going to spend at least $100 on one of these appliances if you want a new one.  There are a number of them available these days that are truly a bargain in my opinion.  The average dishwasher costs around $400, but you can get cheap ones for less than half of that.  There are two main types of dishwashers, full size models and portable units.  Here is what you need to know for each kind:

Cheap Portable Dishwashers

These units are small and are designed to either sit on your kitchen counter or on a kitchen cart.   A cheap portable dishwasher is designed to be hooked up directly to the faucet for water intake, and a separate hose gets placed in the sink for drainage.  You can find cheap dishwashers for sale at stores or on the internet.  The Haier HDT18PA Space Saver compact countertop dishwasher is a good example of something you can get for less than $200.  At $195, it holds 4 place settings, which include plates, bowls, cutlery, and glasses.  It is small enough to store in the corner, and then lift onto the counter when you want to use it.  You can’t keep this type of dishwasher hooked up all the time anyway, since it gets attached to the faucet.

Cheap Full Size Dishwashers

In my opinion, it is a better deal to get a full size model.  Unless you have a tiny kitchen and simply only have room for a tabletop dishwasher, a large one is wonderful.  The big advantage of a full size model is that it can hold lots of dishes.  You can let dishes pile up in there for a few days if you want, and then run it when it is full.  With a tiny portable dishwasher, you just can’t do that.
In my opinion, the best cheap dishwasher that you can buy today is the whirlpool DU850SWPB.  It can hold 10 place settings, and comes with many features such as different cycle options, high temp boost, water filtration.  And with a price tag of just $297, that is about as cheap as they get unless you want to look at garage sales.

I know some people don’t want to simply buy the cheapest dishwasher they can find.  Some appliance manufacturers pride themselves on making good quality products, which come with higher price tags.  Bosch is one of these companies.  But each brand also has lower priced models.  You can get a cheap Bosch dishwasher for $499, and they are certainly higher quality than other cheap models.

Is a Tabletop Dishwasher Right For You?

Many people these days can’t fathom life without a dishwasher.  The majority of households in the western world have them, and some people seem to have forgotten how to wash dishes the old fashioned way – by hand.  Though most homes have full sized dishwashers that fit right under the counter top, there are some situations where having a large dishwasher just isn’t possible.
Here are some of the situations where tabletop dishwashers might come in handy.

  • Apartments that have tiny kitchens – Sometimes there is no room for a full sized dishwasher.
  • Office kitchens – These are great for office kitchens.  Nobody wants to clean up after the whole office, and this way everyone just puts their coffee mugs and other dishes into the dishwasher, and it gets turned on when full.
  • Camping – These mini-sized dishwashers are perfect for camper trailers.  Nobody wants to spend half an hour doing dishes when they are camping.  One of these dishwashers comes in very handy for families on the move.
  • People on the move – If you are constantly on the move, staying a year in one place, and then moving on, one of these comes in handy.  They are easy to pack up and can be moved with other household things easily.  Although manufacturers will call this appliance a portable tabletop dishwasher, it isn’t as portable as it seems.  Weighing in at around 50 pounds, you wouldn’t want to carry these machines too far, though they are easy enough to take down the stairs if you are moving.

Here are the most common tabletop dishwashers available:

Heir – The Heir tabletop dishwasher is big enough to hold four place settings.  That means it can hold 4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 glasses, and so on.  As 312WR2YH96L._SL160_dishwashers go, this is about as small as they get, but if you want to save space and don’t have many dishes, it is perfect.  It is about the size of a large microwave oven.  It comes with a few convenient features as well.  It automatically shuts off if the door is opened, and if it starts to overflow, it will shut off the water, which saves you from having to clean up water that spilled all over the place.

Danby – The Danby tabletop dishwasher is about the same size as the Heir.  One feature that the Danby model has is what it calls a “sani-wash” setting.  What this means is that the dishwasher reaches 158 degrees inside during this cycle, and kills pretty much any germs and bacteria that are inside.

Setting up a tabletop dishwasher is a simple affair.  You place the dishwasher either on the counter or on a kitchen cart or some other table.  You need to have it located relatively close to the sink.  Screw the water intake hose onto the sink faucet, and put the water drain hose into the sink.  I read a tabletop dishwasher review by someone who couldn’t figure out how to screw the hose into her faucet.  If it seems as though the faucet on your sink has nothing to screw onto, that is usually because it has a cap on it.  Try turning the cap counter-clockwise to unscrew it.  If it is too tight, a pair of pliers will do it.  Be careful not to scratch and damage the cap though!  If you are concerned that a dishwasher will use too much water, you should be happy to hear that the Danby tabletop dishwasher uses only 2.3 gallons of water each time.  That might even be less water than you would use if you washed the dishes by hand.

If your kitchen is really, really small and you just can’t figure out where to put it, here are some ideas.  I have seen kitchens that have about one square foot of counter space available for preparing food.  There just isn’t room for one more appliance on it, especially not a big one like one of these dishwashers.  One idea is to get a two level table.  You can put the dishwasher on top and the microwave on the bottom, or vice versa. If you get a cart with wheels on the bottom, you can keep it against the wall, and then simply push the cart next to the sink when you want to use the dishwasher.
