Why Use a Glass Decanter?

While many people don’t really know what they would do with a decanter, others have been using them for a long time.  A glass decanter is typically a beautiful glass vessel that is used to serve wine, but people use them for other things as well such as brandy, whiskey, scotch, or any other type of liquor.  The first question that many people ask is why they should use one of these.  Here are a reasons:

One reason why people use glass decanters is because they add to the elegance of your kitchen or bar.  While many people simply choose to put the original wine bottles right on their dinner table or bar, people who have a keen sense of style and luxury know that it looks much better if you pour the wine or other beverage into a glass wine decanter first.

There are some really beautifully designed decanters out there, and they can absolutely work wonders for adding a dimension of class and luxury wherever you choose to use them.  Part of the appeal is that people have been using decanters for hundreds of years.  They date back to the days when there was no such thing as a wine bottle.  If you wanted to buy wine, you had to fill up a decanter from a large barrel and bring it home.  Although few people still buy their wine this way, the art of using glass wine decanters is definitely alive and well.  In addition to their good looks, decanters can serve a functional purpose as well:  They separate the sediment from the wine, which collects at the bottom of the vessel.  In addition, decanters meant for wine should come with a cap that keeps air out of the bottle.  Depending on the type of wine, you can place the whole decanter in the bar fridge to keep it chilled.

Types of Glass Decanters

There are a few different types of these decanters.  As is true with most other types of glassware, the most sought-after ones are made out of fine crystal or are antique.  You you easily find antique glass decanters at antique shops or online at places like Ebay.  An alternative to buying an antique decanter is to get one that is new, but designed to look old fashioned.  For many people, this is a better alternative since they aren’t so afraid of it breaking.  In fact, many people don’t use their antique decanter at all, and choose to keep it out of harm’s way tucked safely inside a display case.

Another popular choice is called a cut glass decanter.  These are usually beautiful, handmade works of art.  The glass is hand cut by skilled glass workers to produce an intricate design.  Some people prefer the cut glass look to smooth crystal, and it is simply a matter of choice.  Either way, they will surely look fantastic.

Finally, some people choose to use their decanters for serving water.  It has become quite popular lately for restaurants to place a large glass water decanter on the table for diners to help themselves.  You can use them at home as well if you want.  The difference between them and glass carafes is that decanters tend to have a rounder shape.
